Languages and Cultures of Ancient Italy: Historical Linguistics and Digital Models

Type of project: National  |  Start date: 20/11/2020  |  End date: 20/07/2024

The ItAnt project aims to investigate the cultures of ancient Italy through their linguistic documentation, utilising technological tools specifically adapted and developed for this purpose. This is made possible through the synergy and integration of methods of historical linguistics (study, edition, linguistic and historical-cultural commentary on texts) with methods and models for the digital representation and processing of lexical and textual data. Given the epigraphic and extremely fragmentary nature of the documentation of the languages under investigation, adequate digital treatment of the current knowledge about these languages will allow for interdisciplinary utilization and potential future reuse in different contexts.

The primary objective of our research unit is the modeling and development of digital tools for the creation and sharing of an integrated ecosystem of digital data for the languages and cultures of ancient Italy. This includes a corpus of digital editions of inscriptions accompanied by rich historical-contextual information, a computational lexicon-thesaurus in accordance with the principles of the Semantic Web, and a reference bibliographic dataset.

The project results will be made accessible in the long term through the CLARIN-IT and H2IOSC infrastructures.
