Title:
Readability Assessment and Text Simplification for Basque in the Ixa Group
Date:
22/05/2015
Town:
Pisa
Venue:
ILC-CNR – Aula Seminari IBF SG 5
Description:
In this presentation I will introduce first the Ixa Group. The Ixa group is a research group of the University of the Basque Country that has been working in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing for more than 25 years. During these years, we have been mainly developing resources, tools and applications for Basque.
Then, I will give some typological and sociolinguistic information about Basque, like the case system or the number of speakers. Basque is a pre-indo-european isolated language spoken in the West corner of the Pyrenees and the Gulf of Biscay (North-Eastern Spain and South-Western France) and has a different status depending on the province in which it is spoken.
After those introductory topics, I will go through the work that I am doing in my PhD thesis: Readability Assessment and Text Simplification for Basque. I will present ErreXail, a readability assessment system which combines both linguistic and statistical information. I will also present the linguistic analysis we have carried out to simplify the syntactical structures of Basque, EuTS, the knowledge-based simplification system we are implementing, and the corpus of simplified texts we are building.
