StratiGraph develops an innovative platform based on knowledge graphs for the documentation and stratigraphic interpretation of cultural heritage, integrated within the ECCCH (European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage) platform developed by ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science).

The project combines desktop and web-based tools with artificial intelligence and 3D modeling technologies to enhance archaeological and paleontological documentation. The platform supports both online and offline usage modes, enabling real-time correlation between field observations and existing knowledge bases.

StratiGraph significantly reduces the time span between discovery and data publication, while improving the accuracy of documentation and interpretation of shared cultural heritage, and ensuring full control and data ownership exclusively for institutions based within the European Union.

Within this context, the Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale “Antonio Zampolli” (CNR-ILC) research unit focuses on the study, training and evaluation of large language models (LLMs) of different dimensions, preferably open, applied to the domain of stratigraphy in archaeological and paleontological contexts. These activities are oriented toward the integration of generative artificial intelligence solutions, including prototypes based on retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) interacting with the knowledge graph, in support of documentation and interpretation processes.
