Description: 
Italian readers with developmental dyslexia present a visuo-perceptive span with a limited amplitude and an extremely slow and fragmented reading.
Several of our studies show that reading based on morphemes (derivational roots and suffixes) has some advantages, allowing readers with dyslexia to use units of lexical reading with an amplitude that is smaller than a single word.
I will show how the properties of the root affect mainly the speed of reading, while the suffixes mainly affect the accuracy.
I will discuss how morpho-lexical reading can be a compensatory strategy in dyslexia.

Cristina Burani
She is a Head of Research at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) in Rome and Professor of “Language: evolutionary disorders and treatment” at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste.
Her main research interests focus on Experimental Psycholinguistics and Neuropsychology of Language, with a particular reference to lexical processes and reading in adults without disorders and with forms of acquired dyslexia as well as in children with a typical development and developmental dyslexia.
She spent periods of research at various foreign institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA), the Max-Planck-Institut für Psycholinguistik in Nijmegen (NL) and the Center for Biomedical Functioning Imaging at the University of Aberdeen (UK).
She taught Psycholinguistics and Neuropsychology of Language at various Italian universities and carries out advanced training activities in doctoral schools.
She is a scientific consultant for international and national journals and for Italian and foreign research funding agencies as well as author of numerous scientific papers in international and national journals and volumes.
