ALT-EDIC: Italy’s active role

Important news for the Italian participation in the Alliance for Language Technologies (ALT-EDIC): following the Assembly of Members meeting held on 18 June 2026, Fabio Pianesi, Distinguished Fellow at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Italy’s representative in the ALT-EDIC Assembly of Members, has been appointed Chair of the Assembly of Members. The new Vice-Chair is Stefan Leijnen, representative of the Netherlands.

The important role entrusted to Fabio Pianesi further strengthens Italy’s contribution to the European ecosystem for language technologies and multilingual AI.

ALT-EDIC is one of the first European infrastructures established as a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium. Its mission is to develop a shared European infrastructure for language technologies, with a particular focus on Large Language Models, the availability of European language data, and the promotion of Europe’s linguistic diversity and cultural richness.

Italy contributes to ALT-EDIC through the joint involvement of Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale “Antonio Zampolli” (CNR-ILC), Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and CINECA, on behalf of the Italian Government. Within this framework, CNR-ILC contributes scientific and technical expertise, policy support, and Italian language resources made available through CLARIN-IT.
