ILC has always been engaged in activities of research and development, alongside more advanced external and internal training initiatives.
Externally, ILC researchers are involved in teaching activities in numerous Italian Universities (Bologna, Ferrara, Florence, Macerata, Pavia, Perugia, Pisa, Siena) and international Universities (Venice International University). The Institute participates in Faculty Boards for research doctorates (in particular, Pavia and Pisa) and is engaged in the co-tutoring of PhD theses carried out in Italian and foreign Universities. These strategic activities foster the creation and development of collaborative relationships with the research groups of the Universities involved, and promote training and recruitment of young researchers in ILC projects. Among the various collaborations, there is the privileged relationship with the University of Pisa, in particular for the degree courses of Humanities Computing. In this respect, ILC conducts teaching in computational linguistics within the framework of first- and second-degree University courses.
The training activities of ILC researchers are also carried out in foreign Universities, as in the case of research doctorates or organisation and teaching at summer schools in the field of computational linguistics (European Summer School in Logic, Language And Information - ESSLLI - or the NetWordS Summer Schools), or in those sectors in which computational linguistics technology plays a central role, for example in the juridical domain (Summer School LEX - Managing Legal Resources in the Semantic Web).
Internally, thanks to the strong interdisciplinary features of the types of research conducted, ILC presents itself as a place of unique learning, by offering a number of competences that cannot be found within the University, which is characterized by monodisciplinarity research. The Institute's experience in training ranges from the different sectors of computational linguistics to the study of humanistic disciplines supported by computational linguistics methodologies and tools (as in the case of computational philology). The Institute collaborates in different forms to the numerous degree theses for bachelor's, master's, and post-graduate degrees currently in course. At present there are six doctoral theses of scholarship students, temporary researchers, researchers belonging to the Institute, and also external theses, both national and international. In most cases, training takes place through participation in national and international projects. Scholarship students and trainees are regularly hosted at our Institute thanks to a convention with Italian Universities, first of all with the University of Pisa, in particular for the degree course in humanities computing.
