WRITE Terms of Reference


GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The Written Resources Infrastructure, Technology and Evaluation (WRITE) Committee provides an international forum to encourage and support international coordination and cooperation in the field of written language resources and technology assessment methodologies.

The main objectives of this organization are:

  • to provide a formal liaison between the research and development communities, national professional organisations, national and international standards organisations and funding bodies, and to promote integration and progress in written language resources, standardisation, application in HLT, guidelines for intellectual property protection for information and data exchange;
  • to become the authoritative source of knowledge about international standards for written language resources, and to provide a forum for national and international debate about standards in these areas;
  • to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge about written language resources and technology assessment, and to promote international information exchange via electronic and print media and the organisation of meetings and workshops;
  • to promote coordination among the communities of written, spoken and multimodal language resource developers and users, and to foster new synergies among these communities through the organization of joint events and initiatives.

ORGANIZATION

The WRITE Committee is organized along two dimensions:

  • regional domains;
  • topic domains.

The WRITE Committee is constituted of a Coordination Group (CG) and an Advisory Board (AB).

Special purpose working groups may be set up as required.

The CG is organized as follows:

  • Officers: the Convenor, the Deputy Convenor and the Secretary;
  • Regional Domain Rapporteurs;
  • Topic Domain Rapporteurs;
  • Data Center representatives.

The WRITE Committee:

  • elects its Officers, by a majority of vote of its members;
  • selects the regional and topic domains, and invites experts to act as rapporteurs for these;
  • invites eminent scholars in the field to become members of the AB;
  • organizes the means to communicate information about the work of the WRITE Committee to all interested parties and attempts to ensure broad-based membership from all regions;
  • organizes the annual meeting of the WRITE Committee;
  • invites participants to attend Working Groups or special interest groups as required.

Each domain is organized by a rapporteur, whose responsibilities include organizing presentations or sessions in the WRITE Committee Workshops.

The starting regions are: Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.
