As indicated by the above table, prepositions in Greek form a category of their own.

In Greek, we distinguish between two kinds of prepositions:

  1. simple ones, included in this category, and
  2. complex ones, formed by the combination of an adverb and a preposition, e.g. `panw apo', `mazi me', etc. These can only be recognised at text level with the use of a tagger that looks above word level.

The category of simple prepositions constitutes a closed set, while the latter is productive. At present, we make no effort at recognising complex prepositions, given the need of a multiword tagger, although such a mechanism is planned for the near future, as part of our own research.
