Preliminary Recommendations

Main-Verb Function and Auxiliary Function

These two attributes have to be seen in subordinate position with respect to the two values of Type main and auxiliary and belong to Level 2a. Their respective values are given in the following paragraphs.

Main-Verb Function (MVf)

trans, intrans, impers.

Auxiliary Function (AuF)

prg: for auxiliaries used to form progressive tenses (`be', ...)
prf: for auxiliaries used to form perfect tenses (`have', `avere', ...)
pss: for auxiliaries used to form passives (`etre', `worden', `werden', ...)
pph: periphrastic auxiliary (`do', ...)

Auxiliary Function, proposed in the present recommendations, encodes phenomena which, in the schemes surveyed, are collapsed under the feature Type. Main-Verb Function is a completely new feature.
