Central semantic of value subordinate conjunction

Syntactic criterion

  1. Subordinate conjunctions can only introduce clauses or infinitives; they cannot relate other syntactic constituents. It exists different kind of subordinate coordinations with different syntactic behaviors: the subordinate coordination que which introduces noun clauses, subordinate coordinations which introduce subordinate interrogative sentences (for example quand) and subordinate coordinations which introduce sentences (for example parce que).

Given X a conjunction; If the second occurrence of X can be replaced by que, X is a subordinate conjunction.

Given P, P' clauses, If X doesn't realize a verb argument of P', X is a subordinate conjunction.

Test

If X has as ``antecedent'' an adverb or an adverbial syntagm, X is a conjunction.
