- Conjunctions which have the type-value coord relate two clauses or syntactic
constituents that have the same function.
Given S, S' syntactic constituents,
If S and S' related by X have the same syntactic function, X is a coordinate conjunction.
''son nom'' and ``son histoire'' have the same syntactic function (direct objects)
``lit''
and ``regarde la télé'' are VP's.
Remark:
According to the criterion above, we consider as coordinate conjunctions also the following
morphological units
(in the following contexts):
- X conj Y, with X and Y that have the same syntactic function:
- Pierre, alias /pos=conjunction & type=coord Pierrot
- nominal syntagm versus /pos=conjunction & type=coord verbal syntagm
- .... c'est-à-dire /pos=conjunction & type=coord ....
- conj X conj Y, with X and Y that have the same syntactic function:
Remark:
Don't make confusion between the value conjunction of the introducer in the construction 'X conj Y'
and the value preposition in 'prep X conj (prep) Y':
Given P, P' clauses and P X P',
If X P' P fails, and if X is not in complementary distribution with Y, X is a coordinate conjunction.
- Il mange, car /pos=conjunction & type=coord il a faim. / *Car il a faim, il mange.
but:
- Il mange, parce qu' /pos=conjunction & type=subord il a faim. / Comme il a faim, il mange.
