{"id":7476,"date":"2022-08-12T02:24:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T00:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/progetti\/greekschools\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T15:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T13:10:08","slug":"greekschools","status":"publish","type":"progetti","link":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/progetti\/greekschools\/","title":{"rendered":"GreekSchools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our knowledge about Greek philosophical schools is mostly second-hand and based on Diogenes La\u00ebrtius\u2019 &#8216;Lives of Eminent Philosophers&#8217; (3<sup>rd<\/sup> century AD) and Philodemus of Gadara\u2019s &#8216;Arrangement of the Philosophers&#8217; (75-50 BC) [hereinafter &#8216;Syntaxis&#8217;], an extensive treatise in several books which represents the earliest \u2018history of philosophy\u2019 to have reached us directly from antiquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this work exclusively preserved by the Herculaneum papyri we may derive a virtually systematic account of the history of Greek philosophical schools, which is in many respects unique and much closer to the facts than Diogenes\u2019 is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the original manuscripts which transmit it are in a poor state and the currently available editions of them have largely been made obsolete by the latest technological progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By relying on the most advanced technologies available today, the project aims to provide a new innovative critical edition of the whole treatise and its different sections, with extensive introductions and commentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, we shall apply advanced techniques to both opisthograph and multi-layered papyri belonging to Philodemus\u2019 &#8216;Syntaxis&#8217;, as well as to other papyri, in order to: (a) read the text hidden on the verso; (b) detect, classify and replace overlapping layers; (c) read the text concealed inside the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We shall combine these state-of-the-art methods with new, sounder philological approaches in order to produce a more reliable and substantially improved critical text of Philodemus\u2019 treatise and its various sections through an innovative editorial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we shall produce an open-access electronic edition of it through a pioneering open-source scholarly Web platform, engaging the scientific community in an on-going and on-line collaborative review of our critical edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the framework of the ERC project <strong>GreekSchools<\/strong>, the following platform were developed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/cophieditor\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"18232\">CoPhiEditor &#8211;
