{"id":9845,"date":"2022-06-08T14:43:25","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T12:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/history\/antonio-zampolli\/"},"modified":"2023-05-19T10:03:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-19T08:03:47","slug":"antonio-zampolli","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/historical-background\/antonio-zampolli\/","title":{"rendered":"ANTONIO ZAMPOLLI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Antonio Zampolli<\/strong>, <strong>founder of the Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale &#8220;Antonio Zampolli&#8221;<\/strong>, is a pioneer in the field of Computational Linguistics, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1960<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He began working with Father Roberto Busa S. J. at the Center for the Automation of Linguistic Analysis (CAAL) in Gallarate as coordinator of the electronic perusal of the Opera Omnia of  St. Thomas Aquinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1968<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He became director of the Linguistics Division of the National University Centre for Electronic Computing (CNUCE) in Pisa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1969<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He began teaching Computational Linguistics (at the time called &#8220;Mathematical Linguistics&#8221;) at the University of Pisa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1980<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>He founded the Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italian National Research Council)<\/strong>, which he directed until his death (Aug. 22, 2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antonio Zampolli&#8217;s main areas of research<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>computational lexicology and lexicography<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>computer-assisted language teaching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>formal grammars and parsers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>literary and linguistic textual analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>machine translation, multimedia and multilingualism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>quantitative linguistics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>design and construction of language resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>standards for literary and linguistic data processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biographical profile <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Degree in Classics. Thesis in Linguistics: &#8220;Studies in Statistical Linguistics with IBM Machine,&#8221; 110 cum laude, University of Padua (1960).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NATO <\/strong><strong>scholarship<\/strong>, &#8220;International Summer School on Automatic Translation&#8221; (1961) and NATO scholarship, &#8220;International Summer School on Automatic Documentation&#8221; (1962).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research Director and Assistant Director of the <strong>Centre for the Automation of Linguistic Analysis (CAAL)<\/strong>, Gallarate and Pisa (1960-1966).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researcher (Senior Engineer) at the <strong>IBM Centre in Pisa<\/strong>, Head of the Computational Linguistics Unit (1967-1975).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full Professor of <strong>Computational Linguistics at the University of Pisa<\/strong> (1969), founder and Director of the <strong>Linguistics Division of CNUCE<\/strong> (1969), transformed into a Laboratory in 1978, and in 1980 into an autonomous institute: <strong>Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale (ILC)<\/strong> of the <strong>Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italian National Research Council)<\/strong>.
