{"id":9840,"date":"2022-05-18T11:40:26","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T09:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/history\/"},"modified":"2025-01-07T10:10:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T09:10:58","slug":"historical-background","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/historical-background\/","title":{"rendered":"HISTORICAL BACKGROUND"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale &#8220;Antonio Zampolli&#8221;<\/strong><strong> was established in 1980<\/strong> as an independent institute of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italian National Research Council)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CNR-ILC is the first Italian center devoted to Computational Linguistics as an autonomous discipline, and one of the first centres internationally.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/timeline\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">CNR-ILC: the time line<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Directors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/storia\/antonio-zampolli\/\">Antonio Zampolli<\/a><\/strong> (1980-2003)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicoletta Calzolari (2003-2008)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Andrea Bozzi (2008-2013)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vito Pirrelli (June-November 2013)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simonetta Montemagni (2013-2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vito Pirrelli (since 2025)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Since its establishment,<\/span><\/span><\/span>through a large network of <strong>collaborations with public and private, <\/strong>European and non-European, research centres, <strong>CNR-ILC<\/strong> has been developing synergies with the major stakeholders in the field, with a view to identifying needs and priorities, defining work programs and monitoring progress in the area of <strong>Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Text Processing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the international level <strong>CNR-ILC<\/strong> has always promoted the <strong>inclusion of Italian into the multilingual network<\/strong> of&nbsp;global society, and has been influencing the strategic visions implemented by international organisations in different areas of Computational Linguistics through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>participation in the activities of the major international scientific associations<\/strong> in the field(as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elra.info\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ELRA<\/strong><\/a>, ALLC, <a href=\"https:\/\/euralex.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>EURALEX<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclweb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ACL<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ach.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ACH<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>organisation of international events<\/strong> such as the &#8220;International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrec-conf.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>LREC<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>promotion and\/or participation in international networks<\/strong> (from the early networks of the late 1990s, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsnet.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ELSNET<\/strong><\/a> (European Network in Language and Speech) and ENABLER <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flarenet.eu\"><strong>ENABLER<\/strong> <\/a>(European National Activities for Basic Language Resources), to the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarin.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLARIN<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/progetti\/flarenet\/\">FLaReNet<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meta-net.eu\/front-page?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>META-NET<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networds-esf.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>NetWordS<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the national level, the Institute is among the founding members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forumtal.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Forum TAL network <\/strong><\/a>(2002) and the <strong>TAL Intesa<\/strong> Agreement (2012), which established an institutional framework for collaboration and activation of synergies with some of Italian leading research centres in the field of NLP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CNR-ILC<\/strong> contributed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>the creation and development of initiatives for the evaluation of tools for Natural Language Processing of the Italian language (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evalita.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>EVALITA <\/strong><\/a> since 2007) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the foundation and activities of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ai-lc.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italian Association of Computational Linguistics \u2013 AILC<\/a><\/strong> (since 2015).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale &#8220;Antonio Zampolli&#8221;
