On 7 February 2024, the European Commission officially set up the ALT-EDIC with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/dec_impl\/2024\/458\/oj\">Implementing Decision (EU) 2024\/458<\/a>. Coordinated by France, the ALT-EDIC is supported by a number of Member States, among which Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALT-EDIC\u2019s mission is to develop a common European infrastructure in Language Technologies, focussing particularly on Large Language Models<\/strong>. It seeks to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>improve European competitiveness;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase the availability of European language data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uphold Europe\u2019s linguistic diversity and cultural richness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/language-data-space.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"371\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LDS_logo_ego2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19232\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/language-data-space.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Language Data Space (LDS)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is an EU initiative designed to create a centralised platform for sharing and monetising language data across industries like publishing, language technology, and media. Launched in January 2023, the LDS aims to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>enhance data accessibility;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support compliance with EU regulations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>boost innovation in AI and language technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>LDS emphasizes data sovereignty, allowing contributors to retain control over their data while promoting secure, EU-compliant data exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CNR-ILC\u2019s contribution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/language-data-space.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LDS<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alt-edic.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ALT-EDIC<\/a>\u00a0initiatives are closely linked. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/language-data-space.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\">LDS<\/a>\u00a0initiative is creating the infrastructure and governance framework that will enable the sharing and reuse of language data necessary to develop Large Language Models. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alt-edic.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ALT-EDIC<\/a>\u00a0will ensure the long term sustainability of the LDS. Together, these two initiatives will help to create a single digital market for language technologies in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian government has delegated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilc.cnr.it\/en\/\">Cnr-Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale \u201cAntonio Zampolli\u201d (CNR-ILC)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK)<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cineca.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CINECA<\/a>\u00a0to join\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alt-edic.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ALT-EDIC<\/a>.
