It is largely accepted that human language is characterized by arbitrariness — there’s nothing in the sign forms that is intrinsically related to their meanings. I’ll argue that morphology breaks sign-meaning arbitrariness, and establishes probabilistic regularities that the brain captures and actively uses during language processing. I’ll provide data for this hypothesis from masked priming in bilingual people, eye tracking patterns in developing readers, and semantic models based on word co-occurrence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
