'Science in the Talmud' @ AREAPERTA

In the framework of the new season of AREAPERTA, on Thursday 29th November 2018, starting at 15:00, at the Auditorium of the CNR Research Area of ​​Pisa, there will be a meeting entitled Science in the Talmud: from astronomy to biology. The guest speaker will be Gianfranco Di Segni (CNR - Institute of Cellular Biology and Neurobiology), the coordinator of the Italian translation of the Babylonian Talmud.
It will be described what the Talmud is, when, where, by whom and in what language it was composed, how it is structured and what is its importance for the Jewish culture of today and the past. The Talmud Translation Project in Italian, born thanks to the collaboration between the Italian Rabbinical College of Rome and the "A. Zampolli" Computational Linguistic Institute of the CNR of Pisa, will be explained in detail. Examples of scientific issues in the Talmud will be brought, from astronomy to mathematics, from biology to medicine, in the context of the scientific knowledge of that time, and its relevance for the world of today will be analyzed.
