To find them all! A text search application
Laboratory curated by Emiliano Giovannetti
---
Although the audiovisual medium is characterized by its immediate usability, most of the contents (of a social, informative, encyclopedic, literary etc. nature, also present on the Web) are still today encoded in the form of a text. The enhancement of a literary text, for example, also involves approaches that allow its use through an intelligent access within everyone's reach. On the occasion of BRIGHT, we invite you to experiment with our research application on the “Lord of the Rings”, a text well known to the public also for its cinematic and small screen serializations. We will show how research and technology can provide a valuable support to explore the beauty and charm of an “other” world and to appreciate the vision of its author. The "Lord of the Rings": a piece to be (re) discovered through computational linguistics.

Who can not read his writing...
Seminar curated by Federico Boschetti
---
The digital image of a printed page or of a handwritten page can be read by a human being, enlarged, reduced, deformed etc. But the words it contains can not be copied and pasted, found by a search engine, arranged in alphabetical order, if they are not first extracted from the image using character recognition techniques (Optical Character Recognition: OCR) or handwriting recognition techniques (Handwritten Text Recognition: HTR). In this seminar you will see these techniques in action.
